“Several factors converged to cause the tower failure. The structure of the tower is such that two parts are spliced together. Water had seeped into the tower which had turned to ice with the recent extreme cold temperatures. The ice build-up caused the tower splice to rupture, an extremely unusual situation referred to as “ice-jacking”.
Hmmmmmm. Doesn’t the Whistler Gondola look similar to Whiteface’s Cloudsplitter Gondola? Yes, Yes it does. Doppelmayr who built the Whistler Excalibur Gondola that collapsed also built the Whiteface Cloudsplitter Gondola. Governor Paterson please please please don’t cut Gore and Whiteface’s budget anymore! I would rather run out of toilet paper and have to use paper towels . . . ummmm nevermind . . . Safety inspections are key!
****Latest update from the Whiteface Web site - The Cloudsplitter Gondola is down today for maintenance. The Little Whiteface Double chair will provide access to the Little Whiteface summit.

So I figured since we got some descent snow, I was going to sneak out tonight with my partner in crime Squirrel and ride West Mountain in Glens Falls. As one friend puts it, “it’s the best skiing and riding in Glens Falls.”
Well . . . .
West Mountain is closed till Friday. Kind of a bummer but that means the storm that is blowing through Thursday night into Friday will leave the mountain in even better shape because of the untouched snow from last night into today’s dump. Rock on!
So my wife (Squirrel) and I (E.) went to Jiminy Peak for night riding last night. Being an eastcoast rider, I am used to hardpack conditions and I even enjoy the speed and thrill you get zooming over flat hard snow but last night was ridiculious.
THEY SHOULDN”T HAVE BEEN OPEN! This picture doesn’t paint a true picture of the hell it was riding on 6 inch ice rocks!
In my 7 years of riding I never once ask for a refund but I did last night. Jiminy Peak has a 30 minute guarantee on snow conditions and when I went to ask for a refund after 20 minutes of hell, they gave me a hard time. Listen Jiminy Peak, the mountain was a sleet of ice, snow guns running for a day won’t help the mountain out. It was glaring ice that was unforgiving on my board and my body. Wait till it snows a ton to go back to Jiminy Peak. It’s not worth it right now.
But in other news, WE GOT SNOW LAST NIGHT IN UPSTATE NEW YORK!!!!!!!!! Word on the street is more snow to come through the rest of the week. More to come on this breaking news!
So the rumor is Gore is planning on opening Burnt Ridge this weekend. The long awaited unveiling of it’s expansion. The one trail that will be open because of snowmaking is Echo. It’s a blue trail. We will see how it is. I heard it’s Twister’s sister but with wicked nice views. I am really amped for the opening of Cirque Glades. I heard nothing but rad things about it. Stay posted for a trail review of Echo once it opens.
